P&O Normandy Ferries were taken over by Townsend Thoresen in 1985, but P&O's parent company then took over Townsend Thoresen in March 1987. The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster saw to it that it was the Townsend Thoresen brand that disappeared, and P&O eventually became the main ferry operator using the harbour. In 1981 East Kent and M&D together acquired a batch of Fleetlines from Southdown, of which most went into service with East Kent. 7324 gained P&O livery and is seen in 1984 at Pencester Road yard.
